It is with great honor and respect that I address you on this occasion of the 65th Birthday of Prof.
Dr. Vladimir Kultygin.
I first met Prof. Kultygin at the Meetings of the
Research Committee on Social Classes and Social Movements of the International
Sociological Association (ISA), held at Hitusubashi University in
Tokyo/2003.
I am the President of this Committee. Prof. Kultygin, on my request, participated in the Plenary
Session, which included world-renowned figures in sociology. Prof. Kultygin handsomely
reciprocated with an invitation to myself and my colleague Shujiro Yasawa of Hitusubashi
University to attend a Conference on Tolerance in Saratov, Russia.
The Saratov Conference remains for me a most intellectually satisfying memory but as importantly a
tremendous show of good will and collegiality from our Saratov hosts and Prof. Kultygn.
Throughout both important occasions I was most impressed with the sociological knowledge and
organizational acumen that Prof. Kultygin displayed. I wish him the very best in this most deserved
recognition by his colleagues.
I would also, parenthetically, like to add that Professor Kultygn was instrumental in organizing
support for the candidacy of Prof. Alain Touraine of the EHESS in Paris, for the ISA Mattai Dogan
Award for Life-Time Achievement competition.
I would like to thank as well Professors Vyacheslav Kuznetsov and Dmitri Klementiev
for their support of this initiative.
I have been notified just this morning by the Vice-President for Research
of the ISA that Prof. Touraine has been indeed nominated as recipient of
this prestigious Award. He will be giving the
Mattai Dogan Public Lecture in Durban South Africa in 2006.
We, of course, hope to have your gracious presence in the audience to help us celebrate.
